The two teams performed two different laparoscopic operations for the benefit of Filipino and Vietnamese audiences composed mainly of medical professors and students.

    1st National Behavioral Sciences Conference (25 Feb. 2012 / Buenafe Auditorium, UPCM). Around 350 participants (students, teachers) attended this national confab organized by De La Salle University, University of Sto. Tomas, and UP Manila (with the latter as host). Kabataan Partylist Representative Raymond “Mong” Palatino, the keynote speaker, told the participants "to popularize the theoretical tools you are using in the academe so that other social institutions like the media can be effective agents of enlightenment and not disinformation... The academe must not insulate itself from the real world; it must aim to change the world.”

The Philippines is the lead country in helping developing nations push forward newborn screening in the Asia Pacific region. This 3rd workshop, held at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, was participated in by the following countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Mongolia.

    Dr. Sumana Barua (Bangladesh), an alumnus of the UP School of Health Sciences in Palo, Leyte, was appointed as Team Leader of the World Health Organization’s Global Leprosy Programme last 20 December 2011. Prior to his promotion, Dr. Barua was Regional Advisor and Regional Focal Person for the Leprosy Elimination Program of the WHO South-East Asia Region, with headquarters in New Delhi, India. Dr Barua has a PhD in International Health Policy and Planning from the University of Tokyo. Before becoming a Doctor in Medicine from the University of the Philippines in 1989, Dr Barua obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health from the same University. In 1999 he gained a Masters in Public Health from the University of Tokyo.

At the said symposium, leaders of government entities, the academe, nongovernmental organizations, civic societies, civic industries, and health organizations, support groups, health workers, cancer patients, the private sector and media converged to share experiences and best practices, create opportunities for networking and partnership, and affirm that fighting cancer is a global and multi-sectoral priority.

    PHILIPPINE GENOME CENTER launched! The Philippine Genome Center (PGC) was launched last Nov. 28, 2011, at Makati Shangr-La Hotel. It was established by the University of the Philippines to lead genome research in the country. The Center will focus on Health; Agriculture; Biodiversity for drug discovery and bio-energy; Forensics and Ethnicity; and, Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues associated with genomics research. To support genomic research within the University and in other academic/ government/ private industries, the Center will establish core facilities for DNA Sequencing, Bioinformatics, and Biobanking. The Executive Director of the PGC is Dr. Carmencita Padilla. The website is www.pgc.up.edu.ph. (In the picture, UP President Alfredo Pascual receives a glass plaque from DOST Secretary Mario Montejo to mark the symbolic launch of the Center, while Dr. Padilla talked of its immediate directions.)

Starting this Academic Year 2012-2013 until the Academic Year 2015-2016, the Department of Speech Pathology will not be accepting shiftees, transferees, and second degree applicants to the B.S. Speech Pathology program through its lateral entry process.

Thirty-four (34) graduates of the UP College of Pharmacy are among the passers of the recent board exam, with ten landing in the Top 10. About 576 out of 1, 109 passed the January 2012 Pharmacist Licensure Examination given by the PRC Board of Pharmacy in the cities of Manila, Baguio and Cebu.

Chancellor Manuel B. Agulto regrets the confusion caused by certain statements he made that were published in the UP Manila Newsletter September 2011 issue and the Philippine Collegian October 6, 2011 issue.

Dr.  Manuel  Agulto, director of the Institute of Ophthalmology, was elected by the UP Board of Regents as 8th chancellor of UP Manila at its meeting on 29 September 2011.  He will succeed Chancellor Ramon Arcadio whose term will end on 31 October 2011.

More than half of those who took the licensure examination for chemists this month passed the test, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) said yesterday.

For the past eight years, most countries in the world have been reporting a steady decrease in HIV/AIDS infection but the Philippines and six other nations have been recording an upward trend, a researcher from the University of the Philippines said.

During the seasons of love and giving, more people try to kill themselves using toxic substances, a poison expert from the University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) College of Medicine said Friday.

After the excellent performance of UPCM and SHS-Palo in the physicians' board exam, the University is proud to announce that both the UP College Nursing and the UP School of Health Sciences-Leyte earned high marks in the July 2011 Nurse Licensure Examination.

Eight graduates from the UP College of Medicine made it to the Top Ten of the August 2011 Physician (Complete, Finals and Finals with Prelims) Licensure Examination given by the Board of Medicine this August 2011.

The Office of the UPM Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) and the University Library (UL) are developing a database of published and unpublished completed medical and health researches.
